Winemaker and Proprietor Marketta Fourmeaux has broken down barriers at every turn of her career and has the respect of the wine community to show for it.
She established Marketta Winery in 2008 after founding two other wineries, one in Burgundy, France and one in Napa Valley. Originally from Finland, Marketta was raised in Paris, France where she received a degree in Marketing and Business Administration while also studying enological science. This led to a position with the prestigious Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (INAO) now the Institut national de l'origine et de la qualité) the leading authority of wine in France. She was sent to the U.S. after the now famous Judgment of Paris on behalf of the French Government to investigate California wine making. Marketta spent six months tasting wine, loved it, and stayed. She orchestrated a construction project to dig a basement in her house and built a winery there in similar fashion of how wine is made in Burgundy.
Her efforts have not gone unnoticed by her home country, either. The French Consul General of San Francisco hosted a reception in her honor at which she was presented with the Medaille de Chevalier de L’Ordre du Merite Agricole. This prestigious award has also been given to Louis Pasteur and was awarded by the French President in recognition of outstanding achievement in her chosen field.
Marketta’s philosophy in life is “passion of life, life of passion” and this mantra is reflected in her style of winemaking. She says, “There is an intellectual challenge of winemaking and working with the variables of nature that thrills me. I seek to understand what the wine wants to be and then employ methods based on my observation of the changes that occur as the vines grow, grapes ripen and the wine develops.” Each wine is created using the least amount of intervention possible, including racking by gravity and minimal filtration so each batch maintains its’ own unique personality.
Her ‘Hand Made’ wine series, ultra-small production, is hand-crafted Vins du Terroir—wines that express the nature of the vineyard. In addition to new vineyard development and winemaking, Marketta oversees the vineyard management of the grapes, which are sustainably farmed and hand-harvested, block by block. She then ferments the grapes with natural yeast extracted from the grapes, instead of laboratory yeast, to preserve the integrity of each individual block’s character.
