Greyscale Wines

Launched in 2009, Jean and Larry Rowe of Greyscale Wines feel they are living their dream. Taking inspiration from Jean's childhood of growing up in the vineyard and their combined world travels to famous wine regions, they turned a dream of making their own wine into a reality.

It was a serendipitous meeting with Winemaker Kian Tavakoli, who convinced them to embark upon the Greyscale Wines’ journey. With over 25 years of winemaking, operations and viticultural experience, Kian brings his stellar combination of sensory and production skills to Greyscale Wines. Having graduated with a degree in enology from UC Davis in 1992, Kian spent 4 years learning Cabernet winemaking at Opus One before he became Assistant Winemaker at Clos Du Val where he was in charge of their Reserve Program. Today he is a consulting winemaker for numerous wineries in Northern California, including Angelo Cellars and Mario Bazán Cellars.

Jean brings experience and understanding of grape vines from working and playing among them as a child. Those early experiences have translated to a deeper connection with the vines as an adult. Larry has always been fascinated with wine and the winemaking process as a hobby, and brings an interesting perspective to their new winemaking expedition. With a scientific background he served as Emeritus Professor in Computer Science at U.C. Berkeley. His experience as a high tech entrepreneur and his analytical skills augment Jean's intuition nicely as they endeavor to specialize in Bordeaux-style wines.

The name Greyscale Wines is a unique blend of both art and science. "Greyscale" is a term used in both color science and computer science to describe infinite shades of grey between black and white. Much like wine, and life itself, each year produces a different version of wine, never to be repeated but rather to generate another shade.

“Wine is neither black nor white. It’s always shades of grey.” ~Greyscale founders, Jean and Larry Rowe
