This week represents a first – the first Malbec featured on Cellar Angels! And as the honorary first, we wanted to showcase something really special. Enter Emerson Brown, a powerhouse team with a large depth of winemaking knowledge and experience both nationally and internationally.
Learn about the partners behind this fantastic Malbec from the Oakville AVA in Napa Valley.
Stephanie DeMasi - Since 2003, Stephanie DeMasi has been heading up sales for Juslyn Vineyards. In 2005 she was promoted to General Manager and oversees everything from compliance to quality control. A New York City native, Stephanie graduated from Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration and has worked with an admirable list of industry Who's Who, including world renowned restauranteurs like Drew Nieporent and Daniel Boulud, and Napa local wine pundits Cathy Corison and the Bounty Hunter. Stephanie completed the Advanced Certificate of the WSET in 2002 and is nearly complete with her Diploma for her Masters of Wine. Earlier this year, Stephanie founded FlyWine, the only Super Premium Single Serving of wine - and its TSA friendly! DeMasi joined the EB team in April and has worked with both Emerson and Brown with sales consulting on other projects. She brings the estrogen and the front of house can-do attitude to the talented winemaking duo.
Brian Brown - Brian earned his Viticulture and Enology degree from University of California, Davis in 2001. After graduating, Brown worked harvests at Iron Horse Vineyards in Sonoma, Salitage in Pemberton Australia, and Napa Wine Company in Oakville. Eventually Brown was hired as enologist at Trefethen Vineyards where he spent two and half years learning to make technically sound, vineyard driven wines that express fruit qualities over those of winemaking manipulation. Brown finally turned his focus to ultra-premium winemaking and moved to Vineyard 29 as enologist, where he met friend and colleague Keith Emerson. After two successful vintages crafting wines with Emerson at Vineyard 29, Brown was hired as winemaker for Round Pond Estate.
Simultaneous to his responsibilities at Round Pond, in 2005 Brown partnered with Keith Emerson to create the artisan winemaking endeavor, Emerson Brown Wines. Brown and Emerson have consistently collaborated since then and successfully made Emerson Brown what it is today. With a proven track record of quality and value, they continue to deliver Napa Valley wines of exceptional character and style.
Keith Emerson - Keith obtained his Enology and Viticulture degree from the University of California, Davis in 1999. With 14 years in the wine industry, Emerson began his winemaking career at Cakebread Cellars and after a year accepted the enologist position with Sonoma’s historical Gundlach Bundschu winery. There he quickly excelled to assistant winemaker and soon after was named associate winemaker. During 2004, Emerson took a brief sabbatical and traveled to Martinborough, New Zealand to work harvest for Palliser Estate Wines.
That following year in 2005, Emerson joined Vineyard 29 as director of winemaking charged with managing the production of Vineyard 29’s estate portfolio, as well as Cru. As director, Emerson oversees all wine programs for Vineyard 29’s ultra-premium custom crush clientele, managing wine production for prestigious producers including Adler Deutsch Vineyards, Gemstone, Knighton Family, Melka and Leaf and Twig. Highly regarded, and concurrent to his Vineyard 29 duties, Emerson was sought after in 2006 to consult for Robert Craig Winery and in 2008 former employer Gundlach Bundschu called upon him to consult as well. Following a natural progression, Emerson longed to have something to call his own and along with his wife Stacey, created a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir called Sonría in 2009.
