We are so happy to be joining Cellar Angels once again in supporting worthy causes and sharing our Russian River Pinot Noir in the process.  When my wife Rachel and I formed Orpheus Wines in 2011, we knew we wanted to create a business that was about more than just making the best wine from the best grapes.  We decided upon three core principles - community, artistry, and sustainability - and have used these concepts to inform everything we do, from grape growing to wine making to packaging to how we conduct ourselves as a small business.  We continually strive to improve our sustainable practices and our contribution to the community.

As a boutique winery our total production is less than 1500 cases a year; we produced a total of just 300 cases of the 2013 Bacigalupi Vineyards Pinot Noir, and we are delighted to share some of this special wine with you.

Winemaking Philosophy

Wire sculptures at Orpheus Wines tasting roomOne of my primary aims in winemaking is to slow and cool down the fermentation process. By stretching out the duration of fermentation, we decrease stress on the yeast, increase the complexity of flavors, and maintain optimal balance of alcohol, acidity, and tannins in the finished wine. Our emphasis is in showcasing the vineyard, variety and all weather incidents of a year, so that the finished product is the finest self-expression of the grape in its particular vintage and location. We use just enough oak to stabilize the wine and help increase structure within the wine.

Our Bottles

We print directly on our bottles using organic inks and top the bottles with a reusable Zork closure that allows for the same micro-oxygenation as a cork to optimally age the wines, but reduces wasted wine and extends the life of the wine after opening with a built in airtight re-closure.  Our labels are designed by our Art Director Steve Lohman, an internationally accomplished artist who creates an original wire sculpture for each new varietal, which is then transposed onto the bottle.  We invite you to come visit our tasting room in Sonoma Valley, where we have a gallery of Steve’s stunning wire and steel art on display year round.

Enjoying Our Wines

We use our understanding of the needs of the vines, grapes and yeast to make complex, balanced, food friendly wines. Our wines are subtle; they are not going to hit you over the head, so to speak. They change as you taste them and especially as you pair them with food. They are meant to excite your senses. Smell, taste and texture light up different parts of your brain to make a multi-sensory memorable experience.

2013 Bacigalupi Vineyards Pinot Noir

The 2013 Bacigalupi Vineyards Pinot Noir is a prime example of our winemaking philosophy. Round, bright and full bodied, it is a wine that you can enjoy with almost every meal or sip slowly on its own, savoring the nuances as they unfold.  We have loved serving it with our holiday meals, savoring a glass in the evening with a chocolate almond biscotti, and we recently enjoyed it at a winemaker dinner at our tasting room with crispy duck cassoulet with shiitake mushrooms and heirloom gigantes beans.  Pairings with fatty fowl, earthy mushrooms, and almonds make this wine practically sing with its fullest expression of flavors.  Cheers!
