Wine Club Summer Release 2019

The stellar wines in the Cellar Angels Wine Club Summer 2019 release were hand-selected with summer sipping in mind! This quarter's collection has a couple hearty reds we know you enjoy, plus we’ve added a few fun stellar selections for your summer activities on the boat, beach and back yard. We’d like to introduce you to JAX Vineyards, another great story about a family winery. The matriarch and patriarch took a chance in 1966 by purchasing land WAAAY up in Calistoga. It turned out to be a wise decision with some of the finest soils in Napa and even gaining AVA status in 2009. With the famed winemaker Kirk Venge at the helm, you’re in for a treat as you taste through this extraordinary portfolio.

From a highly acclaimed vineyard source in the Russian River Valley, this Vin Gris Rosé sees minimal skin contact. Low in alcohol and oh so easy to sip all day long, the wine shows off wild tart strawberry and cherry fruit aromas with pleasant floral notes (think peonies). A gorgeous pale gold in color, with layered aromas of golden apple, fresh apricot, vanilla, gingerbread cookie, cardamom and just a hint of honey and sweet oak. A rich texture, with flavors of poached pear, apple and gingerbread on the medium-bodied palate, and a beautifully balanced acidity which keeps it fresh and crisp. Tasting Notes: The "Calesa" Vineyard ("Stagecoach" in Spanish), with its expansive views of the Pacific Ocean, long ago served as a resting stop for horse drawn carriages. A pretty pale ruby in color, this wine is meant for swirling and discovering – the nose offers a depth of aromas: cranberry, red currant, ripe cherries, dried violets, bakeshop spices, earth and a touch of oak. Silky, seductive and pleasantly spicy on the palate, with a lingering suppleness and satisfying finish. Enjoy over the next 6-7 years.

Napa Valley, CA

Tasting Notes: “Like a field blend of big red grapes,” the JAX Taureau is named after the Jackson family’s prized bull, legendary for his feisty, high-kicking and vibrant personality. Like Taureau, this indulgent red blend has a complex personality and a dominating character! A glistening, medium ruby with subtle purple flecks popping through, the wine shows off aromatic layers of blackberry, dark cherry and beguiling aromas of pepper and anise. Said one Angel during our tasting session, “I love the nose. I could smell it forever.” Medium-bodied and delicious with a soft kiss of tannins, this approachable, everyday sipper is ready to drink now through the next 2-3 years.

Sourced solely from the family’s vineyard, the JAX team earmarked three outstanding barrels of this “Vineyard Gem” especially for their Cabernet Franc enthusiasts. A deep, opaque garnet in color with rich aromatics – blackberry jam, cassis, dried herbs, clove, and subtle leather and soft eucalyptus notes. Full and palate-coating with fine, balanced tannins, good acidity and a long, lingering finish. This crowd pleaser is drinkable now with room to age for 3-5 years. 92pts Robert Parker

About JAX Vineyards: David Jackson (the family patriarch who loves dogs and tinkering in the vineyard with gin and tonic in hand) followed his lifelong dream to own a vineyard. This prestigious land later became part of Napa Valley’s Calistoga AVA. JAX Vineyards began in 1996, when siblings Trent and Kimberly Jackson collaborated with David to start their first label. Over time, the two identified their unique niche among next generation wine enthusiasts and jumped on the opportunity to buck the “en vogue” winemaking style of their day to focus on the unique terroir of their family vineyard. Soon after, cult Winemaker Kirk Venge was recruited to create balanced wines reflecting varietal character and a sense of place. With the team for 15 years, Kirk is deeply passionate about the vineyard site and has reinforced the team’s focus on “sense of place”. To differentiate from their small lot single vineyard Jax line, they launched “Y3”, which allowed them to showcase more “true to varietal” wines from various AVAs (spanning Napa and Sonoma). The “Y3” symbol was the cattle symbol used on their grandparents’ cattle ranch, Yarrayne. The “3” represents three generations of land tilling entrepreneurs. In 2013, the siblings recruited a third partner, Dan Parrott, a no nonsense individual with a laser focus on balanced wines (historically working in Italian import houses) and a true burgundian aficianado.
