Boutique Hand-Crafted Wine: What Does That Really Mean?

Guest blog courtesy of Kate Boyle MacDonald, Winemaker, Boyle MacDonald Wines

I’ve often spent the day in the tasting room chatting with folks about ‘everything- wine’. I love talking about wine. And vines. And fruit. And the emotions invoked by smelling and tasting. And, well, like I said, ‘everything-wine’.

Cabernet Sauvignon Inspired by André Tchelistcheff | Michael Trujillo Wines

"You might say this 2015 Trujillo Cabernet Sauvignon has been thirty-six years in the making. I am very proud to introduce my fifth vintage of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon under my surname; Trujillo." –Winemaker Michael Trujillo

Clif Family Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon | King of the Mountain

As the most widely grown and highly acclaimed varietal in the Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon is certainly deserving of the attention it receives.  At Clif Family, we like to refer to our Howell Mountain Cabernet as the King of the Mountain.  As cyclists and adventure seekers, this title refers to the best climber in a cycling road race.  Our parallel in winemaking is the best grapes for our winemaking program.  And few could argue that Howell Mountain is the home to some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Napa Valley.

Growing Pinot Noir in Napa Valley | Elkhorn Peak Cellars

This is my 34th season growing Pinot Noir in the Napa Valley and as the years go on, I must say that I still enjoy growing grapes very much. Every year is different and presents its own set of unique challenges, but that’s what keeps me coming back!

Meet the Winemaker: James MacPhail of MacPhail Family Wines

James MacPhail grew up just north of San Francisco in Marin County where, since the 1880s, members of his father’s family have been pillars of the local business community. James’ mother was raised on a dairy farm in western Sonoma County; she remained tied to her Tomales Bay community, regularly engaging James in the lives of the region’s farming families. A passion for business and a love for the land are at the center of MacPhail family life.

Napa Valley Then and Now

It has been more than 30 years since we first visited Napa Valley together, and it’s sometimes hard to believe how much it has changed since then. The quiet towns of yesteryear now thrive, packed with restaurants and wine-lovers; and the once-sparse landscape has given way to endless rows of vines and wineries. Tasting rooms didn’t exist during our early years of visiting, so wine producers would invite you to sit in their kitchen, on their porch, or in their farm offices while drinking their wine with them.
