About-Face believes that when young women and men are given tools to think critically about the often-harmful media around them, they can truly discover their own worth, self-esteem, and healthy body image. 89 percent of women dislike their bodies, which gets in the way of functioning to the best of their abilities or seize opportunities, including finding the confidence to run for political office or achieve in a corporate career. The organization is based in San Francisco, CA, and has three programs for young women:
• Education Into action media-literacy and action curriculum
• Media-literacy and body image workshops
• About-Face.org, a resource-filled web site and online presence
About-Face’s vision is to saturate United States schools with socially conscious media education and literacy for 7th through 12th graders, thus improving their self-esteem and body image and rendering previously harmful media messages ineffective for the companies that make them.
About-Face began as a small volunteer group of passionate women, continued that way for 13 years, and in 2008, evolved into a nonprofit organization with paid staff. About-Face has brought media-literacy education to more than 100,000 young women and men in grades 7-12 via their workshops and web site.
