From Scotland to Sonoma, Winemaker Steve Law has had quite a journey. Steve Law’s love for wine began post-university when he moved from Scotland to France for a job in technology. Exploring various wine regions with his friends on the weekends, he discovered his palate and passion for wine, notably Sauvignon Blanc from Loire Valley, Pinot Noir from Burgundy, Rosé from Provence, and Viognier from Condrieu. However, it was Northern Rhone where he discovered Syrah... and his world changed.
With clarity surrounding his passion for wine and a tech job that eventually took him to Northern California, he couldn’t pass up a chance to work a harvest and dabble in winemaking. It was in 2007 he traded his support in the winery for the chance to make “a wee bit of Syrah” and launched his first official vintage under the MacLaren label.
A winemaker to watch, Steve works closely with his knowledgeable and dedicated growers, as he notes, “vineyard selection is one of our most important quests”. His emphasis is on cooler climate vineyards primarily within AVAs including Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Green Valley.
A visit to the MacLaren Cottage in Kenwood is quite special, where Steve and his wife Heather will personally host and guide guests through a flight of limited-production Syrah, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc among stunning vineyard and mountain views.
