Edna Ranch consists of six distinct sections, with 60 soil types and myriad microclimates encapsulating a remarkable spectrum of terroirs. Remnants of volcanic eruptions, fueled by clashing continental plates, share the landscape with calcium-rich sediments from tiny shells deposited on an ancient sea bed and estuary. Degraded granite meets tufa precipitated in a vanished sea. Heavy clay fills the valley floor while sandstone and clay loam cover the hillsides. Limestone - the Holy Grail for Pinot Noir – blankets the slopes of a knoll.

The Edna Valley AVA is one of four AVA's (American Viticultural Area) of the San Luis Obispo County in California's Central Coast. Located in the south-western corner of the county, it is one of the oldest wine producing regions, dating back to 1800s. Its rich winemaking history allowed it to develop world class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Grenache, Riesling and Viognier. The Edna Valley AVA was once covered by the Pacific Ocean, which now benefits from marine sediment and very fertile soil, further enriched by humus, loam and clay. The cooler climate and long growing season–one of the longest growing seasons in the state–offers ideal conditions for producing exceptionally balanced and complex Pinot Noir. The elevation ranges from 238 feet along the valley to double that closer to the base of the San Lucas Mountains, although the temperature stay moderate throughout, due to proximity to the ocean.
