About the Winemaker:

Sofian Himeur is the newly installed winemaker at Iron Horse, joining Winemaker Emeritus David Munksgard on the winemaking team in March of 2020. Sofian has been in the wine industry for 18 years, producing Gruet Sparkling Wines in New Mexico.

Born in Troyes, France, and relocated to New Mexico when he was an infant, Sofian is the grandson of Gruet Winery founder Gilbert Gruet. Growing up around wineries with his family, he always knew he would be in the wine business in some capacity. With nearly a lifetime spent performing nearly every task in and outside of wineries, he advocates impeccable standards.

When the opportunity came for Sofian to relocate to California, he without hesitation jumped on the opportunity. Sofian has always wanted to branch out from his family and make wines on his own, and Iron Horse presented that opportunity. “Being a part of Iron Horse is truly a dream come true, I have always been very fond of the wines here, and I look forward to continue building on their impressive history.” Sofian’s philosophy of winemaking is that it all starts in the vineyard. With quality grapes, the possibilities are endless.

Sofian spends every free moment with the newest addition to his family, Leon, born just weeks before joining Iron Horse.

About the Vineyard:
At Iron Horse "Estate Bottled" means that the winemaking begins in the vineyard. Their location in Green Valley represents the very best soil, climate and aspects for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The team's goal is to grow the best winegrapes through what we call "precision winegrowing." All pruning, canopy management, irrigation and cover crop decisions are determined on a block-by-block (and sometimes even vine-by-vine) basis, considering both the vintage at hand and the long-term needs of the land.
Additional Winemaker Notes:

A limited production sparkling that is especially designed for toasting the full moon. Made with estate grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this harvest wine is a celebration of the season we all love that comes with the culmination of the growing season.

The Harvest Moon is a new interpretation of a Blanc de Noirs. In blending this wine we choose
Pinot Noir lots that are extremely expressive and fruit forward. Then in a decided step away from convention, we blend in a bit of steely Chardonnay to add a firm acid backbone. Hand harvested in the chill of early morning our Pinot Noir is gently pressed as whole clusters. The juice slowly ferments in stainless steel tanks at 62° to 65° f retaining bright fruit aromas and flavors in the wine. The dosage for the 2016 Harvest Moon is 8 mls Cold Soaked Blanc de Blancs LEX and 4 mls 2014 Estate Pinot Noir.

Food Pairing Suggestions:
A food friendly sparkling wine that works with most fall foods, sauces and preparations. Pairs well with butternut squash soup, pork chops with apples, and classic roast chicken. Also try harvest season frittata, rich with oven roasted veggies and goat cheese or roasted celery root with cumin and parsley.
About the Winery
Iron Horse Vineyards Audrey and Barry Sterling founded this iconic winery in a not so iconic location at the time. In 1976 Green Valley was not only NOT an AVA, but it was rural Sonoma, a place grape growers had not really ventured yet. Learn more
