Winemaker:
Head Winemaker David Milner
About the Winemaker:
David was born and raised in Northern California in a suburban town known as Fairfield. While David was attending Sonoma State University, his roommate worked for a local winery and would bring home wine to taste almost daily. This exposure to wine allowed David to discover its qualities and “ignite the spark.” He was surprised at how much there was to learn, and from then on, he was hooked.

The fermentation bug bit David while he was taking an undergraduate brewing class. He continued to hone his skills over batches of home brewed beer with a few friends, and it left David looking for a new challenge. He had a stint in cheesemaking, but wine would eventually become his real passion.
Vineyard:

Donelan Family Wines sources Roussanne from both the Dry Stack (64%) and Vivio (31%) Vineyards, which are only a mile apart. Of the two, Vivio is higher in elevation in the Bennett Valley, while Dry Stack is rockier. Both vineyards are east-facing.

The Viognier comes from the beloved Kobler Family Vineyard.

About the Vineyard:
Additional Winemaker Notes:

Native-yeast fermented in neutral puncheons, with 11 month élevage in 100% neutral French oak.

The hallmark characteristic of the Bennett Valley Roussanne used in this blend is extremely slow ripening, with harvests consistently falling well into October. We attribute the intensity on the nose to the fruit’s time on the vine, maturing slowly, with complex flavors evolving long before sugar accumulation.

About the Winery
Donelan Family Wines The foundation of the winery began with the family’s estate vineyard, Obsidian. Named after the black volcanic glass in the bedrock beneath the vines, it is one of the most unique in California. It is here the family believes Syrah trumps Cabernet, with its depth of aromas and flavors produced in this unique terroir. In addition to the Rhône varietals Grenache and Mourvedre, they have rounded out the portfolio with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, two more of Sonoma’s famed varieties. Learn more
