Winemaker:
Laura Barrett
About the Winemaker:
Laura Barrett brings her passion for wine, a life-long love of science and attention to detail to winemaking at Clif Family. Inspired by her first harvest in New Zealand, Laura received a Masters in Viticulture and Enology from the University of California, Davis and trained under some of Napa Valley’s most celebrated winemakers. With a vineyard-driven approach and a focus on organic farming, Laura is enthusiastic about working to create balanced and elegant wines.
Vineyard:
Beatty Ranch
About the Vineyard:
Clif Family Winery 2017 Gary’s Improv Zinfandel comes from Beatty Ranch located high atop Howell Mountain, 1800 feet above the valley floor. The defining features of Howell Mountain are high altitude, sunny western exposure and rocky, red, well-drained soils, resulting in high quality fruit with depth, structure and consistency.
Additional Winemaker Notes:
Hand harvested in the cool morning hours, the fruit is hand sorted before and after the destemmer. After a three day cold soak, the juice is inoculated with cultured yeast. During fermentation, temperature and extraction are carefully managed. The wine is then pressed off the skins and placed in French oak barrels for aging.
Aging: 15 months in 25% new French Oak barrels

Food Pairing Suggestions:
Ripe plum and blackberry notes make this Zinfandel a great wine to pair with barbeque and summer picnics. Try it with Smoked Brisket, BBQ Ribs and burgers. Also a nice match to Chili and skirt steak.
About the Winery
Clif Family Winery
Most of us are familiar with Clif Bars. It may even be common knowledge that Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford started the business out of their garage. What is impressive to learn, however, is the wide-ranging lifestyle brand Clif Family has grown into, including an expanded line of healthy food products, Clif Family Winery, Clif Family Tasting Room, the Bruschetteria Food Truck, and Clif Family Napa Valley artisan food products.
