Tasting Notes:

Cellar Angels featured the 2012 Tonti Family Wines Old Vine Zinfandel a year ago and the Zin lovers went wild for it. Its complexity and muscularity without the proverbial jamminess is what makes this wine so appealing.

Picked to perfection and not left to overripen, this Zinfandel shows off a beautifully intense, deep purple color. The enticing aromas lead with bramble, boysenberry, dried herbs and earth, which then reveal hints of vanilla and tobacco leaf. The palate is big and bold with well integrated flavors of cassis and black currants that weave in black pepper, rose, clove, toasted almonds and black tea. The finish reveals flavors of dark chocolate.

Food Pairing Suggestions:
Zinfandel is easier to pair with food than you may think. Grilled meats and vegetables are a perfect match. Try Italian sausage, spare ribs, brisket, and hamburgers, especially when served with barbecue sauce or seasonings like black pepper, basil, thyme, Italian parsley, bay leaf and fennel. Counter intuitively, try pairing with turkey, duck, quail, pheasant, chicken, seafood stews and soups, as well as seared or grilled fish. Zinfandel works very well with Greek and Hispanic cuisines. Cheese is always a good and synergistic pairing with wine. Enjoy with Parmesan, aged Cheddar, aged Gouda, and Asiago. Cheers!
About the Winery
Tonti Family Wines It was a business deal that included Portuguese corks, of all things, that finally gave Peter Tonti the push he needed to follow a longtime dream. Peter's father was from the old country, and it was part of the Italian culture to make wine in the basement. Assisting in the winemaking process and being allowed to sip small amounts of wine as a child was the start of his dream to be just like dad. Learn more
