So exciting! The second 100% Malbec to grace the Cellar Angels pages has arrived! Grown in much smaller quantities than Napa’s top red grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel – the Malbec grape is more frequently used as a blending variety to enhance tannins, color and spiciness in Napa’s Bordeaux-inspired “Meritage” blends. Lucky for us, Maroon Wines’ single vineyard reserve Malbec is one of the few exceptions.
This gorgeous, approachable wine is made of grapes from 11 year-old vines grown on the northeast slope of Howell Mountain. It shows off a vibrant, bright garnet color with purple undertones and loads of ripe, juicy fruit aromas. Strawberry jam, blackberry, chocolate covered dark cherry, candied red cherry and raspberry dominate, with subtle notes of vanilla spice, dried herbs and dark flowers. So inviting on the palate, with lip-smacking, ripe, juicy fruit and silky smooth tannins that lead to a mouthwatering, lingering finish.
