Tasting Notes:

Lovers of Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills are loyal evangelists and know the complexity, quality and age ability of these wines. While MacPhail Family Wines is located in Sonoma County, they jumped at the chance to make a wine from Santa Rita Hills for inclusion in their robust Pinot Noir portfolio.

Intense and dense purple in appearance, it is apparent right away this is not your average Pinot Noir. A penetrating fruit forward nose of blackberry, plum, black cherry, cinnamon, clove and violets intermingle tantalizingly. The palate is complex with incredible structure. Flavors of blueberry, currants meld with smoke, cola, floral and bakeshop notes to lead to medium tannins and a long concentrated lingering finish.

Santa Rita Hills AVA - What happens when you combine maritime throat (a pure east-west series of rolling hills that have no barriers between the hillside vineyards and the adjacent Pacific Ocean), poor marine-based soils, elevated calcium in the soil and the Pacific’s cooling influence through fog, wind and moderating summer heat? One of the world’s best cool-climate viticulture areas for Pinot Noir.

  • Grapes are hand-picked, hand sorted twice and 100% de-stemmed.
  • Fermented with indigenous yeast and as needed added yeast strains. 
  • Aged 11 months sur lie in French Oak, 40% new oak barrels.

Pinot Noir from California's Central Coast is complex with balanced acidity, making it most enjoyable with a range of cuisines. Pair this wine with duck, lamb, chicken and turkey. Also try meatier fish, lighter pasta dishes and vegetarian items such as white pizza for a delightful combination. In addition, cheeses such as Edam, Gouda, Gruyere, light Cheddars and Chevre are excellent pairings. Ideal for a Thanksgiving dinner. Fruit or nut based desserts are also good selections.
