Tasting Notes:

From the famed Beatty Ranch, similar to Black Sears Vineyard, these are the oldest Zinfandel vines on Howell Mountain - over 100 years old. A nearly perfect growing season on Howell Mountain in 2012 resulted in beautifully balanced and complex fruit.  Zinfandel is celebrated by wine enthusiasts as America's heritage wine. It is believed the grape was planted in California in the 1840's by settlers during the gold rush.

This is the way Zinfandel should taste. Happily, it lacks the over-jammy, alcohol infused characteristics that have become commonplace with Zinfandel. Rather, the color is vibrant ruby in color with aromas of black fruits and spice. The flavors are bright, complex and robust. Wild black berries and ripe juicy plum lead the way with boysenberry, black pepper, cola, and black tea to follow. The finish exhibits balanced acidity with pleasingly, soft tannin notes.

Additional Winemaker Notes:
One of the best vintages in Howell Mountain history. Ideal spring bud break, summer fruit set and warm days with cool nights produced fruit with balanced structure and acidity.

Food Pairing Suggestions:
America's heritage grape, Zinfandel is the perfect summer wine. Although red, it pairs well with a host of summer foods. Grilled meat and vegetables accentuate the wine perfectly. Try with beef and pork ribs, pulled pork sandwiches and bratwurst along with grilled poultry and game fowl, especially when served with a heavier spice. Cheese is always a good and synergistic pairing with wine. Enjoy with Parmesan, aged Cheddar, aged Gouda and Asiago. Seasonings and herbs that enhance the food and wine experience with Zinfandel include black pepper, basil, thyme, Italian parsley, bay leaf and fennel. For a delightful summer dessert, pair with grilled fruits like peach and pineapple.
