Tasting Notes:

Hoopes Vineyard 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa Valley

A viticultural treasure in the heart of the Napa Valley, the Oakville AVA has become synonymous with great Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is the source for some of the most in-demand Cabernet Sauvignons in the country. This week we are so excited to introduce to our Angels a hidden gem from the highly rated 2014 vintage! Grown in Hoopes’ 10-acre family vineyard, this classic Oakville Cabernet displays such beautiful balance and elegance. A true sensorial experience, the wine opens with a depth of integrated aromas, led by lifted bakeshop and white pepper spices, dark fruits – boysenberry, blackberry compote and dark cherry. As it opens, aromas deepen, with subtle hints of pencil lead, vanilla-tinged cedar, mint and leather. Medium to full-bodied, with an enticing round, supple entry on the palate. Fine grained tannins are balanced by the wine’s mouthwatering acidity, spicy dark fruit, cocoa and integrated oak. Let it open a bit in the decanter for 30-40 minutes – it’s well worth the wait!

Winemaker:

Anne Vawter & Jennifer Rue

About the Winemaker:
Growing up on a farm in Walla Walla, Washington, Winemaker Anne Vawter developed a deep appreciation for agriculture and a love of wine from her father. Following her B.S. degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis in 2002, Anne worked for various wineries in Washington, California and Chile. Napa followed, where she worked as Assistant to Heidi Barrett at Paradigm Winery for four years. Since the 2012 vintage, Anne has been winemaker for Hoopes, noting, “I love working with the fruit from Oakville. It’s my viticultural solar plexus. I have made wine up and down the Napa Valley, but no other appellation is as exciting to me as Oakville. My overall philosophy is to work with great fruit!”.
Vineyard:
About the Vineyard:
Hoopes Vineyard is located in the southernmost part of Oakville, where Yount Mill Road divides the Oakville and Yountville sub-appellations of Napa Valley. The vineyard grows vigorously. Nestled against a hill and sitting firmly in the flood zone of the Napa River, Hoopes Vineyard has uniquely diverse and fertile alluvial soils despite the small ten-acre size. Farmed and picked by hand, the unique Hoopes fruit receives the highest attention throughout the entire grape-growing process. The microclimate is very cool in the evening and mostly moderate heat throughout the day. The vineyard produces some of the best Cabernet in the valley due to the unique site, clone, and soil combination.
Additional Winemaker Notes:
  • This drought year, tempered by moderate, even weather, has yielded a Napa Valley vintage delivering stunning layers and complexity.
  • Grapes grown in a combination of Clay Loam, Volcanic, Sand, Boomer soils.
  • Aged for 21 months in 100% French oak, 45% new.
