Tasting Notes:

One vineyard. One varietal. One appellation. Winemaker Nick Goldschmidt calls this wine “Forefathers” to acknowledge Alexander Valley as the “forefather” appellation for the Cabernet varietal in Sonoma County. When the right grape is grown in the perfect place, it eliminates the need to blend with other grapes. The complexity you’ll experience in the wine comes from the unique and well-suited soil and the microclimate. This 100% Cabernet shows off an opaque, dark garnet, with layered aromatics of blackberry, dark plum and black cherry. As the wine opens, secondary aromas of dried dark flowers, dark chocolate, incense and subtle tobacco emerge. Zesty acidity and full, gripping tannins present early, a good indication of the wine’s aging potential (i.e. this is one for the cellar!). Decant or aerate in the glass for an hour or so, where rich blackberry fruit and notes of licorice, vanilla and wood emerge and lead to a long, full finish.

Vineyard:
Lone Tree Vineyard
About the Vineyard:
The Lone Tree Vineyard, a unique place that has been touted as such by some of the most esteemed wine writers, sits above the valley floor on one of three uniquely different knolls within the Alexander Valley of Sonoma County. The Forefathers Cabernet Sauvignon is grown on a 3 acre parcel on an eastern-facing, small knoll just east of Geyserville, with gravelling loam soils allowing for good drainage. Lying at an 800’ elevation, it runs cooler than those on the valley floor and ripens very slowly at first. Lone Tree sits above the fogline and gets abundant sunshine during the season. Its longer hang-times translates into more complexity and depth. Lone Tree is cane-pruned, a technique which produces smaller berries, less dense clusters, and a more open canopy. The benefit is more even ripening. More black fruit, more depth, and more power is the signature of these much sought after east-facing sites.
Additional Winemaker Notes:
  • Aged for 16 months, 70% French Oak, 30% American (80% new)
  • Despite lower yields in 2015, this wine is noteworthy for its depth of flavor and extraordinary concentration

Food Pairing Suggestions:
This deeply concentrated, dark fruit-driven Cabernet Sauvignon needs food pairings and preparations to match and balance it. Experiment with proteins like pepper-crusted tuna steak, NY strip or roasted lamb and duck. Compliment with roasted cremini mushrooms, creamed spinach and potatoes au gratin. Or try a rich, cream sauce over veggie stuffed enchiladas. For cheese pairings, try firm, semi-firm, or hard cheeses with a bit of age, including Gouda and Cheddar or Manchego and Petite Basque.
