Tasting Notes:

Crux 2015 Grenache, Russian River Valley, Sonoma County, CA

Crux is one of the few producers of Grenache in the Russian River Valley and we love the cool climate expression of this varietal. The Grenache grapes for this beautiful wine come from the Campbell McKinney Vineyard in the extreme north end of the Russian River Valley AVA. With just a touch of Syrah and Mourvèdre for weight and spice, this fresh, balanced Rhone-inspired blend is unfined and unfiltered, allowing the wine to show off its full depth of aromas and flavors. Medium ruby in color with flecks of pale garnet, aromas of black pepper, dark cherry and strawberry jam up front lead to layered notes of dried violets, subtle vanilla, red licorice and bakeshop spice. Clean and lively on the palate, with a mouthwatering acidity and fine-grained tannins delicately coating the palate. This medium-bodied wine dances on the palate, with enough fruit, tannin and acid to age gracefully over the next 5-7+ years.

About the Vineyard:
Crux specializes in Rhone varietals grown in the Russian River American Viticulture Area (AVA). In a place famous for cool weather varietals, they seek out the relatively warmer sites to grow Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvédre, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah. This area, unofficially known as the Middle Reach of the Russian River, is a transitional area, with a wide variety of grapes planted and bordering on several other AVAs (Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and Chalk Hill). This confluence is the basis for the Crux name, their primary vineyard sources and their homes.
Additional Winemaker Notes:
  • Aged in neutral French Oak to preserve its natural flavors
  • Unfined and unfiltered

Food Pairing Suggestions:
While this wine will easily pair with a broad range of food choices, the Crux Grenache paired with duck confit is one the winery's favorite an highly recommended pairings. Experiment with braised meats like pork and lamb and rich stews or lentil and bean-based dishes complimented by roasted and caramelized root vegetables like beets, carrots and onions. Simply delicious!
About the Winery
Crux Winery What started as two neighbors with a serious passion for wine has since turned into an impressive small production portfolio of Rhone-inspired wines. Winemakers/Owners Brian Callahan and Steven Gower initially planted their own vineyards, situated above the fogline, in the northern part of the Russian River Valley. Learn more
