Tasting Notes:

2014 Cast Petite Sirah, Grey Palm Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley, CA

We are thrilled to feature the latest vintage of Cast’s single vineyard Petite Sirah this month! The premium fruit comes from the Grey Palm Vineyard in the Dry Creek Valley, Cast's estate vineyard planted in 2000 primarily to Zinfandel. Following the traditional Italian method quite common in the region, a small block (just over 1 acre) was planted to Petite Sirah. The purpose of the traditional Italian field blend was to provide a blending grape that would add texture and color to the Zinfandel wines. Instead of blending with Zin, Cast decided to make a small batch of the Petite Sirah – and this one is not to be missed!

The wine impresses from the moment it hits the glass! A rich, deep purple with a dark ruby/purple rim, the wine opens with fresh aromas that jump from the glass. Focused fruit aromatics of blackberry, ripe red cherry, blueberry and fig are dotted with layers of dried violet, earth, mocha and soft oak. Keep swirling and you'll discover deeper layers of subtle smoke and eucalyptus notes. The medium/full-bodied palate is plush, with grippy, rich tannins and spicy dark berry fruit and a touch of smoked oak. Flavors are so pleasantly long and lingering, with a balanced, clean finish.
