Tasting Notes:
The 2009AD (for Winemakers Aran and David) is an exclusive library edition wine blended in the style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and each grape varietal plays an important role in the final product. The main varietals, Grenache and Syrah, are the base of the blend while the Mourvedre provides spiciness and blue fruit notes. The Carignan gives the wine its intense color and aids in the overall structure of the wine. Aged in 25% new French and American oak, this blend is unfined and unfiltered to preserve its true nature. Poured at Michelin-starred restaurants throughout California, this blend is all about the nose. This is absolutely a wine to be savored before sipping as the bouquet leaps from the glass enveloping you with powerful aromas of black cherry, blueberry, plum, fig, blackberry and cranberry are the first to explode from the glass, followed by dusty leather, minerality, sage, thyme, mocha and black licorice. Moderately full in body, with high acid levels, the finish is clean and crisp.

About the Vineyard:

The 2009 vintage in the North Coast region was mild and cool, which caused the grapes to ripen very slowly, leading to especially complex flavors. Rain in October had the potential to effect certain varietals, although the majority had already been harvested. A warm Indian Summer rounded out the season and overall the amount of usable fruit produced was California’s second largest on record. The 2009 vintage is considered favorable and wines produced are considered very high quality.

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) is more than three million acres in size and includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, as well as parts of Solano and Marin counties. Winemaking has been popular in this region since the mid-1800’s and today the area is recognized for its stunning diversity in terroir and wine production.

About the Winery
Carlotta Cellars David and Aran met while studying for the certified exam of the Court of Master Sommeliers. During this serendipitous meeting, the two discovered they share a passionate affection for Rhone wines.
